Professional Services

The biggest problem that any providers of business systems face is the ongoing support of their customer’s business systems.  The 3 main influences that cause these problems are:-

  • ·         Hardware reliability
  • ·         Application Software reliability
  • ·         Customer expertise

Hardware

Over the years hardware has increased in power and capability whilst at the same time reduced in cost and maintenance.  Now powerful computers are to be found in most households, familiarity of use is common place.  This means more users are able to operate more sophisticated programs and equally they are more demanding with higher expectations.

In reality the level of basic hardware support issues has decreased being replaced with more sophisticated requests.

Application Software

Whilst the reliability of hardware has increased the software applications have become less reliable as the systems themselves have become more sophisticated.  Many of today’s application packages have roots in old systems using historic program tools, which have been cocooned in modern technology.  This gives these packages the appearance of being modern products but in reality they are old systems with a new coat of paint.

Therefore many software packages are difficult and expensive to support and often they corrupt databases and need to be regularly maintained.  This takes both time and money.

Most of the application software currently in use today is made up of a core system with a series of bolt-on modules simply to achieve basic functions. Sometimes bolt-on modules are written by the original software author, but many are produced by others to varying quality standards.

This is approach is very restrictive when upgrades to the core system are developed and become expensive to deliver and install.  So many companies today are using out of date software simply because the upgrade costs are too high.  This is detrimental to any business in this position and companies are at risk just because their software is letting them down.

 Customer Expertise

Customer expertise is important at all levels from the top down.  Executive Management holds the vision of the corporate view; Operational management need to understand all of the business processes; and the Coalface Users need to know how to operate and use the programs.  All of these individuals need to be in synchronisation with each other and work as a unit.

As previously mentioned, an individual’s knowledge of “computers” is greater now than it has ever been, but the appreciation of how Information Technology impacts the workplace often lags a long way behind.
